A family day out at Leeds Castle on a gloomy Spring day. The weather may not have been great but the day was fantastic.
Leeds Castle is in Kent!
Yes, you read the title correctly. This castle is not in Yorkshire, but in Kent (though maybe you already knew that)! Why Leeds Castle when it is in Kent not Yorkshire? It bills itself as “the loveliest castle in the world” but there appears to be no source for that quote. It is though a fine example. The property isn’t affiliated with the National Trust or English Heritage so no discounts for admission.
A little bit of history
It is apparently one of the most visited historic sites in England. It’s history dating back more than 1,000 years to the Normans.
The building has been the private property to six of England’s medieval queens, including Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
It has in its lifetime been a Jacobean country house, a Georgian mansion and a 20th century retreat for the influential.
Visitors can explore both inside and outside to their hearts content. It has state rooms, a lovely walk in the 500 acres of parkland and woodland. A children’s play fortress and you can even lose yourselves in the maze, which consists of 2,400 yew trees.
When you reach the middle of the maze you return to civilisation through an underworld grotto. This is complete with macabre forms and mythical beasts created from shells, minerals and wood.
